    Buckles & Straps

    I know I need 2, 1 1/2" buckles for my kilt. I am having a saddle maker that lives next door make straps for me. How long should these straps be? How far apart would you put the holes? See page 107, Preparing the Straps.

    You know, if I was making straps, I'd put holes every 1/2 or 5/8"". I think that would give a better fit. It seems that whenever I do up my kilt, one hole is too loose, the next hole too tight.

    I get my buckles from http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com they carry a lot of different styles, and you can even match differents size in the same buckle.

    All right, Mr. Fungus, I measured the straps on my Stillwater kilts. The over all length is aprox six inches. There are about five inches extending passed the edge of the fabric. You might want more leather to anchor the strap to the fabric; I don't know what Barb's instructions are.

    I would put the holes about a half inch apart as suggested. Hope that helps, and keep in mind that the Stillwater is not a traditional kilt, but only kind of like one...
    I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

    You can also check here;

    http://www.highlandxpress.com/bucklestraps.html

    7" total length with 5 holes spaced 3/4" apart.

    If you do have them made insure you leave at least 2" from the square end to the first hole for room to sew them on.
