buckles and straps
Sorry if this has been answered already but my search came up with too many hits to wade through. I'm going to make an X-marks kilt but I want to do it with straps and buckles instead of velcro. When I made my traditional kilt years ago I got my buckles and a some thin leather from a shoe repair place. I don't have that option now and besides those buckles weren't that high of a quality. So, I want to know if anyone knows where I can find leather available in strap form as well as nice quality buckles. I looked on the Tandy Leather site and they only seem to have leather sold by the square foot and a large but uninspired selection of mediocre looking buckles. Any suggestions?

Check out www.stillwaterkilts.com I believe Jerry has some in his misc. section. You could also contact Rocky at USA kilts, or maybe Matt Newsome at Scottish Tartan Museum. They might be able to sell you some.

Several options:
Stillwater (as mentioned above)
Cavscout: first quality handmade by X Marker in Georgia (US)
http://www.oconeeleatherworks.com/MiscAcces.htm
If on mini-budget:
Belt from thrift store. Cut off end (oppossite one from buckle) and add neccessary holes. Either get a belt with the appropriate buckle or get the dritz stamped buckle from a craft or fabric store (less than $1.50). A Bit more work and not as nice as Cavscout's but cheap (about $2.50 for one I did on one of my earlier kilts).
As for me, I plan to use Cavscout's for my next few kilts (at least), as well as retrofit an older one or 2.
