Ferguson Britt Glengyle Sporran Review
OK all, I needed a dress sporran for our Burns Supper so I turned to our friends at the Scottish Tartans Museum Giftshop for a new sporran. They provided for me a Ferguson Britt Glengyle Muskrat fur sporran.
Nicely crafted by hand from Muskrat fur, Deerhide for the trim, tassels and back. The interior was lined with elk hide, so the tag said. It has a very nice lining in it so it must be what they claim. Nicely done.
the cantle was held shut with a vintage style loop/knot combo that works rather well.
One thing to keep in mind, the opening is not generous but again, I wouldn't be lugging the whole enchilada to a Burns Supper. Pic of me trying to jam my big mitt into the sporran. Poor sporran ...
The belt provided with the sporran was very substantial with a very period type of adjuster. It works just fine, thank you and looks very classy. BTW, the belt fits very snugly through the channel in the back of the sporran.
All in all, I am very satisfied, to the point I am saving for a black leather/shunk hide version next spring. For the curious, the sporran was photographed against my MacKinnon's Quality Kilts Heritage of Scotland PV kilt. Another good deal, in my mind.
Later,
Ray

Thanks for the nice review, Ray!
Just in case people are curious about the size of the opening, we do have a few muskrat fur Glengyle models in stock at a special sale price of $340 (normally $375) that have slightly smaller openings that the standard Glengyles. I believe this is one of those that you have.
http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/...fbspecial.html
In this case, the opening of the cantle on yours will be 6" across. The standard for a Glengyle is 6.75" across, if I recall correctly (it's still before 6:30am and I haven't had my second cup of coffee yet!). Some of the Ferguson Britt sporrans have much wider openings, for example the Inverarnan and the Inverlochy styles have very wide mouths, though I'd have to get my ruler out to tell you just how wide at the present moment.
Another factor to keep in mind when ordering any Ferguson Britt sporran is that the plain leather models are made with a gusset, whereas the fur faced ones are not. This means that the plain leather sporrans will have a slightly larger holding capacity and the cantles will be able to open a bit wider, as well.
So if someone has a large, meaty hand to contend with, I'd recommend something along the lines of an Inverlochy in leather -- the "wide mouth bass" of sporrans! :-)
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the muskrat Glengyle. We all really enjoyed petting that fur while it was in our stock. Many people are surprised at just how soft muskrat can be!

Congratulations Ray on a wonderful sporran, I've got an FB Muskrat and it is a favourite of mine it really is soft, the really excellent thing about the Ferguson Britt sporrans is they can go from very casual to formal, something no other sporran I'm aware of can do.

Yep, you have to love them. I have a Fergusson Britt in Skunk with black leather. Looks great and a good alternative to a full mask sporran.

I pet my Glengyle beaver too. Recently had a lady (giving her the benefit of the doubt) ask to pet my beaver.
