i know I'm going to regret asking this...

.....I just know I am. Nothing good can come of it. OK...so I'm having a kilt problem. When I wear a trad kilt, and take a seat someplace, I've noticed that no matter how well I do a "pleat sweep" to get things under me, I end up with certain...ahem...aspects of the naughty bits in contact with the seat. I especially notice this if I am sitting up to a restaraunt table, or at a barstool. Now I know this is not good form on sooooo many levels , and not that comfortable either, but I'm at a loss. I wear a 23-24" long kilt at 5'11", I'm hitting the mid knee, and I don't have a gigantic keister or anything (45" hips) , sucking up the posterior coverage but it happens consistently. Not a problem with contemporary casual kilts, worn at the pants waist.

Any of you more experienced kilt wearers experience this, or come up with a solution? (besides the anatomically correct barstool...that was a riot!)

I don't really have that problem, but if it really bothers you, you could always wear underwear.

Yeah, it's not been a problem for me and it sounds like we're approximately the same size...you are doing a discreet sweeping of the kilt as you're sitting?

Like Beloitpiper said, underwear is always an option...no one can fault you for maybe wearing a pair of black boxers or boxer briefs if it's a problem.

I'm definately doing sweeping as I sit. I've considered going to boxers, but would rather solve the problem as I enjoy the comfort of going regimental.

Joining a Nudist colony would help with the pleat sweep problem.

Have you seen Hamish's pleat sweep video?

No I haven't, and one of our esteemed female members pm'd me with what I think is my problem! Not enough "hip-flick" and bending over too much to sweep the pleats, causing the rear hem to rise too much in the process. I'm so glad there are women on this board! I'll have to watch Hamish's video when I get home. I don't think my system will play it at work.

nope...requires Flashplayer and my work 'puter is without.

    Her other observations included:

I just watched Hamish's video again, too. Some of the big things I noticed (ignoring the pleat sweep for a moment):

    - Keep the rear down, don't stick it out to sit, or bend over while trying to sit or reaching back to do a pleat sweep. This will cause the kilt to hang vertically and get crushed accordian-style. You'll have very little kilt under you.
    - Lower yourself to the edge of the seat and while you continue lowering yourself to sit, THEN push your body back. This seems to help pull the pleats where they need to be, under your rear and legs.

Sometimes, I wonder if the "angle" of the pelvis and direction of sitting are the biggest problems for making sure you have the kilt under you when you sit

Thanks, all, again for the help! Now I have to go home and get a kilt on...

Then I would definitely stay away from metal park benches in the Winter if I were you.

If you think that getting your tongue stuck to a frozen flagpole is a bummer...

I've been thinking about it, and sometimes I notice that when people pull their kilt down to their knees, they only pull the front down. Next time, make sure the pleats hit the knee at the same level as the apron.

Dude, sit your rump down on the edge of the seat and slide back on to it; there won't be a problem.

Although, I think you've realized that; looking at one of the posts back there.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Since csbdr's question has been answered, and his problem resolved as well as to prevent a thread already on the edge of our family friendly guidelines from plunging into the realms of the completely inappropriate the Moderators have decided to close this thread.
