    The newbie essentials

With talks of helping the newbs outs, I thought maybe we should make a list of the bare essentials, the must haves and so on. Whether its manufactored or custom.

    The basic:
    a kilt
    a belt
    sporran
    sporran belt or hangers
hose (whether kilt or garden is up to you)
    flashes

    the accessories

    sgian dhu

feel free to add on. Even reviews. Or say "a must have sporran would be a thorfinn"

    You guys get the picture/idea.

Put the hose up at the first section, and it will work. Not that you have to always wear hose with a kilt, but that you should have them... just in case. Also add a way to hang or store the kilt.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

I believe they've all been covered. For several years (and pretty much now) all I had was a kilt, sporran, sgian, belt. And I don't really know that the sgian is essential.

All else is really gray on the mash.

    Cool Good Thread

I agree with the lista, but I would rather have a sgian as a basic than a sporran.

Great idea for a thread, I'd have to say the essentials really depend on what you want to look like when kilted. For me anyway, the following would be my list:

    Essentials
    1. A Kilt, in my opinion the best kilt you can afford is the way to go.
    2. A plain leather Sporran, a Freelander would be a good choice as it holds quite a bit and looks great doing it.
    3. A pair of Hose in a colour that compliments the kilt I'd say for a start W. Brewin hose are a great buy.
    4. Flashes or Garter Ties, I prefer garter ties as they are more comfortable, available at the Scottish Tartan Museum.
    5. A Belt either one of those Dress Belts or a Casual Kilt Belt, it really is your choice again it depends where and why you will be wearing your kilt.

    Secondary Stuff
    1. A Sgian Dubh, I've found some great buys on ebay for Sgian Dubhs
    2. An Argyll Jacket, I'd say for a start a Black Barathea with silver buttons as it will be the most versatile, I'd say go for the waistcoat here so you can dress it up.
    3. A Bonnet of some sort either a Balmoral or Glengarry, in my opinion a Balmoral would be best.
    4. An assortment of solid colour ties, and a Black bow tie, to dress up your Argyll Jacket from number 2.

    new stuff

    Ok here goes,
I'm as green as the day that happens this Tues so I have lots of questions.
I bought my only kilt (sport kilt) for hiking in. But after wearing it man I am digging this stuff. So my next purchase is a Buzz Kidder brown Rob Roy sporran. My wife has purchased me a couple pair hose that was mentioned above off ebay. (sporran and hose not yet delivered)
I believe I am about to push the button on a Stillwater standard. I must get this in time for the Daddy-Daughter banquet at church at the end of the month.
I know there are lots of nice to have and varing dollar amounts for each. I will be wearing this thing as casual 90% of the time with a few evenings like the thing with my little girl.
My wife is looking for a sport coat to cut and mend to the nice kilt jacket.
She could hook me up with flashes also no issue there. I would like a tradional pair like the ones from the tartan musuem.
What is ya'lls advice for the next necessary purchase.
I have read here about the tool belt from Home Depot but I don't know how that would look with the more dressy occasions for belting.
My most immediate need would be for the banquet so if I don't have the jacket what is my best option for dressing the kilt up for the night?
    Let her rip folks
