    Keepers of the Kingdom

A wonderful book, Keepers of the Kingdom, by Alastair Bruce, contains many wonderful photographs of the ancient officeholders of the United Kingdom. For your interest, I scanned a few of the relevant Scottish ones!

The Marquess of Huntly, "Cock O' The North":

Former Lord Lyon Robin Blair as Pursebearer to the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland:

The late Sir Donald Cameron of Lochiel, KT:

The Earl of Erroll as Lord High Constable of Scotland:

The late Sir Fitzroy Maclean of Dunconnel, KT:

The Duke of Atholl inspecting the Atholl Highlanders:

You've done it again Sandford, I love the yellow hose and garter look, I'll have to try that out. what a great bunch of photos what really strikes me is how the entire matching idea in Highland wear, is a greatly North American one.

The picture which I find the easiest to criticize is the one of the Earl of Erroll. I think Lord Erroll must have been rushed: he forgot to put on a waistcoat, which really ought to be worn if one is wearing a jabot; and his hose need to be turned down a little bit more so that the "stripes" line up (it could be that the hose are too small). Ah, but he sure has a wonderful doublet!

His jacket appears to be made of velvet, although it could be moleskin, or even corduroy.

I thought the same thing. I'd love to have a vest like that and have been thinking that if I were to get serious about sewing my own clothes, that's where I'd start.

I'm not sure (says the guy with the colorful MacCreary tartarn) that I could pull off that much flash in most situations I would see myself in, but it's an awesome ensemble, nonetheless.

    Regards,
    Rex.

A lot of great looks there! They all look quite dashing, though I must say, the Marquess of Huntly and the late Sir Donald Cameron of Lochiel are my favorites.
