Royal Regiment of Scotland
I am sure this has been discussed somewhere before, but I been googling and looking here for it and couldn't find it. I am curious less about the black watch tartan, and more about the Black Watch themselves.
Simply put, what style of kilts do they wear? Is it box pleat or knife pleat, and are they 8 yard kilts? I would assume they use regimental weight (18oz) but maybe I am mistaken.
Anyone know? I am just think because maybe if ever I do get a BlackWatch, I'd get something similar to what they wear.
Thanks.

All the SCOTS battalions wear box pleat kilts, although prior to the formation of the RRS the Black Watch kilts were knife pleats,

That's an interesting change as I believe all the old regiments used knife pleats. Do you think this is a cost saving measure? - less material needed and probably easier to make.

I stand to be corrected here, but I seem to recall that the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders had box pleats.Perhaps I am wrong?

You are indeed correct, I doubt it was adopted from cost cutting, probably more by the action man decision making process

is it a 4 yd box pleat or a military box pleat that is an 8 yd?

so unless I am mistaken \ mislead, your "Military Box-Pleated Kilt" in regimental weight black watch tartan would be accurate?

Fairly, especially if made with a high rise of 4 inches, no apron fringe, no keepers, and a solid-coloured waistband. Military box-pleated kilts are really knife-pleated kilts with the facing folded back.
