    X-Kilt Under Apron Question

I'm working on an X-Kilt and have a couple of questions about the aprons.

First off... Thank you, thank you, thank you! Alan, Your X-Kilt plans are simply awesome! My 12 year old daughter and I are working together to make kilts for each other. Now my 10 year old son and 8 year old daughter want to make one too. This has created some great family time. But I digress... back to the questions.

I have read the "The Art of Kilt Making" and the Box Pleated Kilt addendum for some greater insight into your plans, but it left me with a couple of questions.

1st. Would there be any benefit in A-shaping the under apron on both sides?

2nd. There is a 12" under apron pleat (becomes 6") added to the Over Apron, would it also be beneficial to add the same 12" under apron pleat to the Under Apron?

You could do that. That's the equivalent of the "reverse pleat" on a trad kilt---it makes a box pleat with the last knife pleat on the right side.

Alan chose not to, for simplicity in the published instructions. HOWEVER he made an extra-wide, flat, under-apron to ensure modesty and freedom of movement. I like the reverse pleat, but be sure the under-apron is plenty wide.

I put good sized under apron pleats at the edge of both aprons, it encourages the aprons to remain vertical and together when sitting down or climbing over obstacles.

The under apron might benefit from having a shaped edge if for some reason it had to be narrower at the waistband than you'd like.

Most of the time, however, I believe the under apron is just made as wide as desired and finished with a straight edge.

Just remembered this post and wanted to say thanks for the welcome. I son't think I'll be able to make it to the Burns' Night.

Thanks for inviting me though. Maybe I can catch the next one.

NO benefit int he A-shaping, but it can't hurt so if you want to do it, why not?

And do you want to make that last, forward-facing pleat of the last box pleat super-deep? GO for it.

    Thanks for the information.

I'll keep you all posted with some pics as I make it. And some of my daughter making hers too.
