Utility Kilts

I was at a renaissance fair this weekend and decided (as my second kilt -- in addition to my more traditional style blackwatch casual kilt) to pick up a black Utilikilt Original.

I was able to get the price down to 160$ even (normally 187 + tax ... US Dollars) .. I plan on wearing for more hands-on activities .. Like yardwork and the such .. Because it feels more durable (and is machine washable)

what's the rabble's opinion on utility kilts?

I need to find my male-line clan tartan (Hughes) so I have more options to go out in.

I have a black workman's UK and I couldn't be happier with it. The thing is more like armor than anything else.

It does take alot of care when washing it, but thats a small set back comapred to all the great things about them.

No UK's are not traditional, but they dont claim to be either. So for comfort and freedom in everday wear without the fear of ruining them, I highly reccomend UK's.

what's the rabble's opinion on utility kilts?

I've been wanting one for some time now... mainly for working around the homestead. I doubt I would ever wear one out in public since I'd feel better represented by a traditional Scottish (tartan) kilt. But all in all, I like the Utilikilt idea, and I was looking at some this weekend at the local Highland Games. If they had had one in my size, I'd probably have bought it.

I have a couple UK's and think they're a pretty good value for the money. I also have 2 Freedom Kilts (made by the owner of this forum) and an R Kilt (made by Robert) which are both of equal value, plus they are made to measure and offer different fabric choices.

I just did a kilt in that tartan no more than a week ago (as well as 3 other Welsh Kilts in the past 2 weeks...). It turned out very nice!

I also own several utilily kilts in various colors/styles by various makers. For the amount of junk I need to carry around they work very well. I wear them out as "regular" attire like I would jeans. I am wearing a UK Survivor today to go on a class trip with my son's school. I have lunch for both of us, snacks, wallet, keys, phone, etc in the pockets and don't need a backpack. That being said, they still don't look as nice as a well-made tartan kilt for special occassions.

I have two Utilikilts. Each one was purchased to conform to dress codes at work. A black one from 2001 when it was called the Neo Classical and a 2009 tan Original. I have been thinking of getting a brown Workman's UK but they don't seem to have them in stock in my size. Guess I should lose some weight...

I dislike them completely, but then again, I am just an old staunch traditionalist. It is not a traditional Highland kilt, the Garb of the old Gaul, to me. Sorry for the bluntness, I am merely being honest and mean no disrespect to those who do wear the utili-kilt.
