Silk neckties..........????

I have a lot of silk ties that I wear ever day to work, and church, but was wondering, is it OK to wear them with my kilt? They are all conservative "regimental" style striped, solid, and some tame patterns.....no paisley or neon green or pinks.....

You missed the option 'Yes' with no caveats.

I don't particularly like ties as they serve no function but unfortunately convention dictates that we must wear them. Therefore to me they should say something about you. Either school, club, regiment, clan etc or something about your taste or style.

To quote the Prince Regent in Balckadder: 'Life's too short to wear boring trousers', its also too short to wear boring ties!

I would generally try to avoid nylon ties or nylon anything else but some of my Regimental ties came in a choice of nylon or nylon.

Go for it, as long as the design/pattern is not overly busy. Simpler is better in my view.

Wear them, forget all that matching carry-on. There was some(rather a lot actually) talk about getting an Xmarks "regimental " style tie up and running, but somehow it just did not happen.

I like the idea of an X Marks tie. Maybe there could be a design contest, so some of our talented members can display their creativity. The rest of us could benefit from the product.

I voted OK but not the glossy type for this reason:

I bought a tie which matches the red in my kilt quite nicely but look at this photo:




The tie looks fuschia!! It's because the sun caught it just so, and it's shiny.

The tie is actually exactly the same colour as that bagcover, but you wouldn't know it.

That made me realise that a shiny tie only matches the kilt in certain light conditions.

Here's the tie I've worn for many years. It's not shiny and it always matches my kilt and bagcover:




But recently that tie just wore out! (I've been wearing it since the 1980's.)

So when I went shopping for a new tie I was aware of the shine factor, and bought a matte wool tie.

Sorry Jock, I know you dont' care for all this "matching colours" stuff. I did wear, for many years, my RSCDS regimental style tie regardless, which more reflects how they dress in Scotland I think.

It used to be the only place my wardrobe had much personality was my ties. Now with highland dress many of them are too busy, so I am slowly aquiring a few more.

For those who might be tie shopping, I went to JC Penny's yesterday and bought silk ties, usually $35, for $3.85. They also had $60.00 waistcoats for $8.00.

I spent less than $50.00 and they said I "saved" over $250.00.

There were a couple of nice designs in play, and the topic was going forward pretty well. After the usual know-it-all troll attack, the staff at that time closed the thread pending a mods discussion with the owner.(Hank) For whatever reason the topic was never re-opened.
