Silk kilt

I got to thinking. Yeah, I know, that's dangerous. I'm might hunt up a plaid or dark solid color dupion silk and try making a kilt out of it. Anyone have any experience with such a project, and if so, how does silk work for it? Any problems or drawbacks?

spoze it depends on the type of silk,I got a sample of chinese silk from TFCK, looks like something you would cover a chair with,I have had shirts made of the soft "silky" kind of silk, and also have one made of silk that feels like coarse cotton.

I've seen 'em at TFCK and tried one on. They crease easily apparently. I asked Hamish; advice about one but can't remember the title of the thread. If I find it I'll let you know.

bubba I dont mean it the wrong way but a silk kilt is IMHO over the line, unless the silk is the lining!

You would have a hard time convincing me that something made out of silk was a kilt no matter how well it followed the pattern. And you guys know I am pretty open to kilt interpretation, but....I think I would have to say pass on that one

Heck, you can even get silk tartan. A friend will be going to visit her family in Egypt this fall and promised to bring me back 8 yards of suit weight silk. The stuff is cheaper there by a long way. Her family is in the business so she gets it real cheap. $20 to $30 for 8 yards. Might be an interesting project

I've seen the silk tartans and the plain silks, and (quite frankly) any kilt made out of that would need to be reported on "another" bulletin board!!!!!

It's a thought, but one that would require a proper sequined sporran to complete the emsemble!

I've seen 'em in the flesh and they do manage to retain the masculinity of a wool kilt, with the advantage that your tallywhacker isn't rubbed raw whenever you walk more than 500yrds.
At that price Bubba you can afford to make one and see if it's OK. If it looks a bit girly sell it on ebay you'll get more than your money back. Win Win.

Jimmy, depends on the silk. Suit weight silk has been used to make mens suits for a long time. I'm sure not talking about that light weight fashion fabric for blouses and light dresses.
Rhino, yeah, and at the price Fatima says her family can get it it's no big deal if it doesn't work out. Heck, cotton would cost almost as much here in the States. Suit weight silk wouldn't really look much different than some other fabrics unless you looked closely, it sure would feel different though
