My Brothers Wedding
Next year my brother is getting married, I wasn't planning on going kilted but last week he returned from organising the suit hire with his fiancé and told me that unlike the rest of the family they hadn't hired a suit for me because they thought I would want to go in my kilt.
I'm just starting to build up my wardrobe of highland wear and don't yet have anything formal so although I could hire items like the jacket I'd rather use this as an opportunity to expand.
They'd like me to be an usher so I need to co-ordinate with the other groomsmen, they're all wearing black morning suits with white winged collar shirts and dark red ruche ties, shirt and tie is easy but i'm not sure about the jacket and hose, also would i need a dress sporran and sgian dubh or will my plain black leather day sporran do?

I'd go with a black argyle jacket, or 5-button waistcoat (or both, depending on how cold it is).
For the hose, you could just pick a colour you like: grey might be nice if the trousers of the morning suits are also grey (add a bit of colour with flashes), or something more daring and bright- maybe a brighter red, to bring out the colour of the tie (don't bother matching the tie, just compliment the rest of the outfit).
I'd also be inclined to go with a normal white shirt/tie, rather than the ruche- but if you rather go with the ruche combo- then I would use the high waistcoat (doesn't really work without) - but you could go with or without jacket.
Good luck
Cheers,
Michael

Oh,
and I don't think a dress sporran is strictly necessary, but if you have the money, you can add another element of colour/texture/forwantofabetterword"bling" to your outfit.
Same for the sgian dubh.

I would say Argyle jacket and five button waistcoat, to go with your Ruche tie. A dress sporran would look better than a plain leather one but the chioce is up to you same with a Sgian you dont need one but if you want one...
Hose colour will depend on your tartan as well but gray with red flashes might work or red to compliment your tie with dark coloures flashes
Just my tuppence

the tartan i'll be wearing is stewart hunting, i like the idea of the grey hose, i've got 6 months to save up, first priority is the jacket, i'll get a dress sporran if the cash allows nearer the time i think

Go to The British Shop website. They have former rental sporrans for 50 bucks. I just got one for myself. Looks very nice in pictures and in the hand. Saw a similar one for sale new, it was around $275.
They are rabbit fur with three tails hanging down the front of the sporran on silver chains.
I wish I believed in reincarnation. Where's Charles Martel when you need him?

I was at my niece's wedding last month and I wore my newly bought Hunting Stewart kilt.
I wore a green ruche cravat, black shirt and black hose with Prince Charlie Jacket and 5 button waistcoat, some in the forum say it went against convention but I received lots of compliments on how smart it looked.
So wear what you think you look good in.

Quite right Jimmy if we want to go against convention then it is purely down to our choice. However, in the case in question here, there is an added twist and that is that formal day wear(morning dress) is being worn and that does guide us towards being rather more conventional. This wedding is suggesting----- no wrong word, demanding that this is not a come as you are event and the guests and ushers should really pay rather more attention to their attire than perhaps they normally would.

Well black morning suits are being worn so the kilt equivalent is the black barathea silver buttoned argyll, with a 5 button waist coat as an added option if so wished.A white shirt, with a silver hued four in hand tie is the thing really, although as you are not the main player in the event a lower key four in hand tie might be worth considering. Hose colour, well the "anything other than white" holds true and I think in this case black does too. Bottle green, lovat green might be an option. A dress sporran ought really to be worn, but again as you are not a main player in the event, I personally think a plain black sporran reduces the bling a tad and does look fine. There is no need for ghillie brogues, black brogues(wingtips) or plain black shoes will do nicely-----well polished of course.
