I'm probably the only one that can.

I was the textile advisor to the film, not that they necessarily followed what I advised hence Rob Roy’s tartan in the film.

Argyll is wearing a length that I had to hand which was something I designed, naturally dyed and wove. The tartan was basically an early – mid C18th type setting.

Later I learnt that the ‘props’ were sold off and so this piece is probably someone’s picnic rug and they won’t have the faintest idea what they have. It as a lovely piece and if only I’d known at the time I’d have bought it back.

Or, someone's smelly hound dog is sleeping on it...!

What was negative about Rob's tartan inthe film?

Nothing per se but as I had access to a couple of C18th pieces with MacGregor associations both the head of costume and I wanted Rob Roy in something historically correct. The same costume girl worked on Last of the last of the Mohicans and The Last Emporer.

Unfortnately the Director thought anything with pink (light red) wasn't manly enough. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!

I can just hear Michal McIntyre's voice from "the creation of the Kilt" echoing in my head...

"It's no' on, mate! I's girlie!"

Beautiful plaid, figheadair. It's a pity it has vanished. Hopefully it was put to some good use.

Well done, Figheadair! Can you post a pic of the historically correct tartan?

Looking at Argyll, I'm fairly certain that there's a mustard / umber / gold component that brackets the red. The blue/green is outside of that.

My proportions aren't right, but this is what I'm seeing (roughly)

    Tartan

I'm sure there is no reason to guess as Figheadair is the designer and producer of it, and would likely be able to reproduce it exactly But when I first saw it, it reminded me a lot of Lochcarron's Holyrood Golden Jubilee tartan.
