fur on sporran project

My first attempt at making a sporran. Hide is African springbuck. IT is finished except for drawstrings to pull the gusset closed and a latch string to keep it closed. It is 9" in length, 6.25" wide, with a 3.5" gusset.

















When I get the drawstrings done I'll post a pic of me wearing it. It is designed to hang from the kilt belt, not a sporran belt. What do you all think?

Nice! With any luck, we can join at the Ren Fest. I want to see this thing first hand. I've been thinking about getting a springbock hide myself for a similar project.

This turned out to be more straight forward than I thought. 40 hours of planning and 4 hours actual work. I spent a ton of time trying to get the right number of holes but finally ended up just using the awl and did one hole at a time. I believe i could do the next one in far less time. The springbuck hide is thick but very soft. There are a few flaws but i'd much rather wear this than some $25 pseudo-leather economy sporran. Let me know what date you're going to the Ren Faire and we'll plan on meeting there.

You know what, Rondo? For the life of me, I can't figure out why the hell people keeping buying the crap that I make! I'm told my work is beautiful... but I see so many flaws, so many things that I know I can do better- things that I should have done better... and it drives me nuts! I think it's part of being a craftsman. I'm slowly forcing myself to come to grips with the fact tat nothing I ever make will be up to my standards, but damn it all, I'm going to do my level best to get my work there some day! Artificer is one of my biggest inspirations, and I bet he feels the same way! I bet he looks at a sporran, sees an out-of-place stitch that no one else in the world would ever see and he thinks to himself "Wow, this thing sucks..." No matter how beautiful the rest of the world tells him it is... Learn to live with the flaws.

Oh yeah- as to Fest- I want to actually go to this year's Celtic Fling. I've never managed to go on that weekend, ironically enough.
