Trews. Under a kilt? What The!

During a google of all things kilt, I found this...

"Under the kilt are a pair of short trousers, called trews, made of thick cloth, and similar to schoolboys' short trousers."

Where the heck did they get that info from? Here's the link to the site...

The dot PL domain is Poland. Anyone here from Poland?

Well, I know that back in olden days they did used to wear tartan trews taht were more or less long hose or even tights under their kilts.

    I wouldn't mind having a pair.

There are quite a few things on there that aren't 'quite right'... That's the thing about the internet. Any numpty with a computer can put up a webpage with bad info and it's out there for the entire world to read as 'fact'.

It was not unknown in the winter for Highlanders to wear full length trews or even woolen breeches under the kilt during the 17th and the first half of the 18th century.

I perused the rest of his website. He is a young man who is not too long out of school. He states he is interested in English speaking countries and computer science. He apparently has been given some faulty information about modern wear. I used his contact page to correct the error and refer him to the forum, if he is interested in learning more about the wearing of the kilt.

    "Trews" and the kilt

The author is correct. Even as late as the 1950s and 60s when a gentleman unwrapped the package the postman had delivered he would discover, in addition to his kilt, a pair of "trews", not unlike a pair of modern boxer briefs or trunks. These were intended to be worn under the kilt, and were often of tartan, but more usually of dark blue wool or heavy cotton.

Proving once again, that you never know what your going to learn on this fine forum. I had no idea. Nice to know for all those who insist that there is only ONE way to properly wear the Kilt.

When I picked up my last kilt from the kilt maker in Inverness in 1997, lo and behold there was a wee(un-asked for) package, waiting along side the main one, containing a pair just as you describe.

Interesting though I would not even hint at the merest inkling of asking THE question.
