    Plaid brooches

So I wasn't sure where to put this, either historical or traditional...

BUT, I'm looking for a good plaid brooch for my wedding this year. I had originally planned on getting one made for this, which would look awesome, but the high price tag made me rethink it. I'd still like to find something at least fairly unique, but am curious if there's anything I should keep in mind in my searching. For instance, are they ALL round? Do they need to be?

A nice antique or (antique looking) one would be nice, most of the brand new ones I see online just strike me as very uninteresting and common, something my fiancee and I have looked to avoid in the details like this.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for historical pieces, or traditionally acceptable ones that might not look like every other one I've ever seen?

    Thanks for the help!

MAKE YOUR OWN or get it made

Call me crazy, but I suspect you can get a sheet of silver and cut it yourself. (with snips or a fine saw) If you can't attach the pin, get someone to do that, bearing in mind the weight it must hold. Why not start out with a 4 inch square of paper- or a square of former beer can aluminum- and get busy scribbling and doodling. Chances are your bride has some ideas...

If you don't think you can manage building your own, why not consider retrofitting one by inserting or attaching something of personal significance in the center, where the yolk of the fried egg would otherwise reside?

Be sure to show us your process...

Well, i'm not terribly good with metalworking, Unfortunately. I could make something nice and flat with perhaps some decorations on it, but nothing that would be worthy of a wedding piece.

I'll see about retrofitting one, if I can find a basic one I like.

It'll be a fly plaid, MacDonald of the Isles modern hunting, worn with a Montrose Doublet, horsehair sporran, diced hose, and those dreaded ghillies.

I'd recommend doodling around and then getting in touch with Mike McRae at Scotia Metalwork. I have a brooch he made years ago, about 3 inches across in sterling. . .It's a domed solid hexagon with a carnelian in the center, and some nice engraving in the panels around it. Actually looks like a Victorian-era antique.

Oops, actually I don't, my girlfriend has it right now.

I have had great luck on ebay. Just a quick look yields these:

I picked up this one on eBay, only 1.5" wide, and wore it at my son's wedding:

It was stolen from my checked baggage at LAX on the way home.

(Still extremely angry... mostly at myself, because it was in a carry-on I had to check at the last minute, through my own stupidity, and I didn't pull it out.)

    That one's pretty nice.

Here's a jeweled one my lass picked out. It's 3" across at the widest point, right there in my price range. If i don't get good news about the last inquiry for a custom one I sent out, she's expressed she'd love to see me get this one.

I got a quote from him to make the custom one I really wanted, and as amazing as it would be, it was just a tad on the expensive side for a brooch I'll seldom use.

I shot an Email to the guy Dale Seago recommended as well hopefully he's a bit more affordable. more than anything I'd like my custom one, but not at the cost of having to buy less booze for my guests or anything.
