Morton Mills PV ?

I Was wondering if Marton MIlls was the only mill in the Uk that weaves PV.
i only ask this because A. from reading the threads here on this site, it has become very clear that MM PV is second to none, and all others are pretty much worthless, and B. because i just emailed a kilt maker here in the States about there PV and what mill it came from, as the website only said the PV comes from the UK. They responded with they would not release the info as to who their supplier was.
this was a very reputable kilt maker here in the States and alot of the Rabble here have kilts by this company (no i will not release the company name, but is it was NOT USA KILTS) and i am trying to decide if its worth my time and money to try them......... or just wait till i can afford a semi- trad from USA KILTS, as my Jonesing for kilt number 2 it starting to get really really Strong

Maybe they will send you a swatch so you can examine the cloth. Personally I owned a PV kilt from another company and when I went to the USAKilt storefront I immediately sold mine. If I was to buy another PV kilt I would go for a USAKilt.

Not to hijack your thread but if anyone knows of where to buy PV tweed post a link.

Marton Mills make a great PV product and getting a kilt from a company who use their materials should pose no problem. USA kilts has colour charts of most of their tartans.

It seems odd that they would not want to release who their supplier is. I own a USA Kilts Semi-Trad and a 'Casual Kilt' from Skye Highland Outfitters, both in Marton Mills P/V. USAK and SHO are both open and proud about the source of their fabric.

There are certainly other suppliers of P/V fabric all over the world, so I wouldn't be surprised to find some other than Marton Mills in the UK. Though, I don't know of any by name. I agree with Cowher that you should request a swatch of the fabric before making a decision.

I don't know about MM PV kilts, but I am very pleased with my USA Kilt.

It is very comfortable and looks great!

well the thing is i want a USA semi-trad, but this company has a "value kilt" in PV with the teflon in it, but also with the three buckle closure. cost is the same as the USA casual, i want the semi-trad from USA because i like the look of the three buckle.
so i guess i'll just wait till i have the extra cash. hell it wont be long, i just am getting so up tight about my wool kilt, and need something i can wear two or three times a week, and not be inbarest to be seen in public with it so USA it will be

NOTE: am not inbarest to be seen in public in a kilt. I have just seen some REALY cheap kilts on other people. thats what i mean by inbarest to be seen in public

It's at this point I'd be walking away and it's also at this point I'd be telling them why I was walking away. So they expect you to spend with them but won't tell you exactly what it is you're buying? Incredible!

yep, they do have a good rep, and i have been told they make a fine product when making wool kilts, just dont know about the PV. and this was not enough for me to do what i would consider to be bashing them. as this is really not a big deal, just a dumb sale's mistake

If it's the company I think it is (and I'm 99% sure I know EXACTLY who you're talking about), I will say this: they NEVER give fabric sources to any customer. Even if you're a pipe band who has ordered from them before, they will not tell you which mill your cloth came from.

There are several reasons they do this:

1. To keep you as a customer... if you want a matching fly plaid or another kilt from the same cloth, you MUST (perhaps **) go back to them to get the same cloth as they have records of what you ordered.

2. To protect their sources so you can't compare apples to apples.

3. So they can charge more for less expensive cloth. If you want a tartan that's 'Rare Select' from Lochcarron, they can charge the corresponding high price, but order the cloth from Marton mills which is less expensive and only has a single tier pricing.

As a company, we (and MOST reputable vendors up here) will gladly tell you the source of your material. On our site (wool gallery section), we show you every mill's offerings so that you, the customer, can make the decision which mill to use.


**If you know the characteristics of each of the mills' cloths, you can figure out which mill created a certain tartan for a kilt. I've figured out what mill did kilts for 2 separate pipe bands who ordered kilts from a source in the US who refused to name the mill (b/c they didn't want to lose the pipe band as a customer).
