Homespun Great Kilt - Celtic Croft

Has anyone bought one of these? If so, how do you like it? Also, how does it compare to the other Great kilts they offer? And, what is the "ancient" kilt versus the Great?

    Thanks,

    burly brute

P.S. I did use the "search" function and could not find anything suitible to answer these questions, if you guys know of a thread that would be awesome if it has already been addressed!

I don't have one of their homespun great kilts, but I do have one of the wee kilts. I honestly love the material. It has the hang and feel of a heavier cloth because it's a loose weave, but it's only 10oz material, which was a godsend this weekend, as the temperatures soared to 100F at the festival at which my living history group was giving presentations. Even in the lighter weight material, it was miserable. The pipers in their heavy wool kilts and waistcoats and other such regalia were in bad shape and spent a lot of time in our tents, and the clan tents. So how does it compare to the other great kilts? I don't know. I do know how it compares to the material, though. It's awesome for wear in the Colorado desert in the middle of July.

So as to the "ancient" kilts... they look like knockoffs the terrible costuming in Braveheart and bare no resemblance to any genuine ancient kilt that I have ever seen.

Oh yeah... and my big bum is 56 inches. The 6 yarder fits me great! AND the pleats are still rather deep- at least as deep as my hand is long.

That was a lot of good advice, and some that would probably help a lot out here in the valleys of Arizona. It also helps as I myself am a gentlemen of substance, and so knowing that the extra money is well spent is good to know also! Thanks Nighthawk a ton!

My first kilt 9 years ago, and Only tartan one until my recent USAK order, was Celtic Croft's premium great kilt in Ancient Gunn tartan. I paid the extra for cheater pleats. 9 years and I still love it when/if it ever gets cold enough to wear it comfortably!

I also bought 4-yards of their homespun Weathered Gunn as a great kilt for my boy...nothing better for a growing teen! The material, as Nighthawk said, is lightweight but really doesn't feel it.

Very nice stuff! And great folks to deal with!

Yeah, no problem! If you want, here's a picture of me wearing it:

It's the best I have for the time being, give the fact that I'm usually the one behind the camera!!
