    Place to go in Scotland

I'm in Scotland for the next two days.... Dundee actually, and I wouldlike to visit a nice kilt shop. I've been in a couple, but they were very touristy... I'll be round about Dundee and perth today, and in Edinburgh tomorrow. Suggestions?

Yes The Royal Mile is loaded with tat shops.

But there are a few places with real Scottish-made things. Here are a couple of them (in 2007, don't know if they're still there)

Actually John Morrison is part of the Gold Bros Empire - would hesitate to recommend it. The next shop, Nicholsons is OK. To be honest though I would give the Royal Mile a miss altogether. Where I would recommend is Armstrongs in the Grassmarket. They always have a selection of used kilt stuff, and its the real thing.

Geoffrey (Tailor) is a little further down from Nicholsons and is recommended by many and frowned on by some.

Kinloch Anderson in Leith (Google for location) is the real deal but with prices to match.

    Good luck,

    Peter

Oops I didn't know that!! Thanks for the heads-up.

Geoffrey Tailor makes all their own kilts and jackets there in Scotland, do they not? I hope so.

Yes, Geoffrey Tailor make their own kilts (and weave their own cloth too I believe). Sorry I meant Geoffrey Tailor which is next to that dreadful Morrison shop. Nicholsons is further down the Royal Mile. I always recommend Stewart Christie - http://www.stewart-christie.com/ - who are the best I have found (from personal experience). They are also not the dearest.

I'm a complete newbie here and to kilt wearing, but just enjoyed buying and wearing one to a wedding (Ross hunting ancient, 8yd in Lochcarron 13oz). I ordered it on-line from Heritage of Scotland (Gold Bros/John Morrison) because they were the only on-line outfitters I could find who would guarantee to deliver made to measure on time (oh why do I leave important stuff to the last minute), and before I had found and read the cautions about them on this forum. So I was a little nervous before delivery.

To be fair to HoS, they delivered on time, they kept me informed of progress, they split the order at no extra cost when one item was in danger of being late (it arrived in good time), their telephone support was friendly and prompt, and, above all, the quality of the kiltmaking (kilt is branded John Morrison) and tailoring seemed perfectly good to me. Being a newbie, I realise that I'm in no position to tell fair from excellent, but as far as I can tell the kilt was made well, was neatly and accurately pleated to the sett, hangs well, and swings well. The kilt and jacket fit perfectly, they got loads of compliments at the wedding and I'm perfectly happy with it all. Am now looking forward its next outing.
