Creative uses of fly plaid after the wedding?

Thread idea sprouted from a different thread. Seems like a fair number of brides want the grooms in fly plaids of some kind, but really except for the groom's wedding day he will likely never again in his life have an opportunity to actually wear the fool thing.

So, liek the title says, what do you or could you do with yours after the bride's day?

I'll start. I couldn't think of anything to do with the typical one square meter fly commonly available online these days. I instead chose to make a half belted plaid like Matt Newsome recreated, using two meters of double wide. I purled it myself, finished dimensions about 56 x 80 inches.

Now that the wedding is over it is hanging in a closet, but with the colder months upon us I will soon stealthily move the thing to the car.

Should my bride complain of a chill this autumn I will produce the cloth (I folded my pleats but did nto sew them down) and wrap my bride in it for the ride home. She happens to be less than 80 inches tall and less than 56 inches around.

In the future I can see our wedding plaid used perhaps as a communion table cloth at the wedding of one of our children. It took a month of my free time to purl the fool thing, it is staying in the family a while.

I ordered the more common (in 'murica) one, I liked your ideas about busting it out for birthdays and what not. I was thinking of slapping it on for burns suppers to class up the joint.

There is much wisdom in your post AKScott. First to do what your bride wants and second to find a way of using that "fool thing" (aka fly plaid) after the wedding

A friend of mine packed his away after his wedding in a special box and plans on bringing it out again for the christening of his first child. They are going to wrap the baby in it on the big day..which will be many years in the future!

Two things came immediately to mind when I saw the title of this post.

One thing you can do with a left over fly plaid is make a Ruana. This is Spanish for a wrap or stole. We make ours by taking a 60" X 60" square of fabric and cutting into one of the sides up to the middle.
Then hem the cut edge.
Then pull and purl a 4" fringe all around.
These are really great as a light wrap on a chilly evening.

Here is the Ruana which is on display in the shop.



The second idea is something we have been doing here in the shop for quite some time now.

We take a 40"X 40" piece of fabric,
Hem around all four sides.
Sew small plastic snape every 6" or so around the edges,
Cut and hem a matching size of Cotton Flannel in a complimentary color to the Tartan. This becomes the liner.
Sew the other half of the snaps to the flannel. This way the liner can be removed and washed.

Viola, one baby receiving blanket.
As soon as the baby is born someone calls us with the full name, birthdate, weight and length. We then put the flannel part into our embroidery machine and custom embroider the info inside the liner.

It's OK Jock. I got the message about never wearing it again after the wedding. On the other hand my bride is/was not the only one looking for a fairy tale wedding day.
