White House black tie guidelines?
Anyone have a copy of the official guidelines for black or white tie events at the White House? I'm guessing they list highland dress as an option?
There is a kid at Granite City, Illinois high school being told that a kilt is not appropriate for prom because guys should wear trousers and girls should wear dresses...

I smell a potential lawsuit on the basis of discrimination.

Hmmm
Well, unless you are attending the prom at the White House, I'm not sure that what is appropriate at the White House has any bearing at all on your situation.
If the school guidelines for the event says "males wear trousers" then wear trousers. What's the big deal, have you not worn trousers before? If it says "trousers or other male garments worn at the equivalent of black tie", then you have some room for self expression.
If others are allowed to wear some version of their ethnic clothing of choice, and you aren't, then that's a different issue as well.
However, it seems to me, that the hosts have the right to set the level and style of dress. It also seems to me, that in this case, that the school is host.
I hope you go and have fun, regardless of what you are wearing.

I don't know about the white house, but I have a book called " A Gentlemen's Wardrobe " That covers conventional and highland dress for all occasions. It was from the mid to late 60's by an british publisher(I am at work) they use and quote Sir Edward Duke of Winsor for examples on what to wear when.It worked for me in highschool with the same problem.

As if I would base anything on what the White House says.

Unless that is the 'source' being cited in the first place, for denying the wearing of Highland dress. In which case, by all means, inquire from the White House protocol officer (or whatever the title is), as to what constitutes 'black tie' at the Executive Mansion.
