More fun more tartans to choose from!
On a visit with my parents I got a hold of my moms geniology research and come to find out I have clans McDonald, Spouse, Stuart, Macewan all on my Scottish side but those aren't all of them. Now to put this info in generalized topic, well I know there are a few different tartans for my family availabl..... Ok so where I'm with this is does anyone know where the lamen can purchase quality tartan at an affordable price without having to pay through the nose?!

I am a tad confused. Are you wanting to purchase lengths of tartan to be made into something later? Or are you looking for items like a kilt in one of your family tartans? In either case, I'd recommend starting with those who advertise here on X marks. USA kilts and Scotweb are great places to start.

Marton Mills is the most inexpensive source I know of for wool tartan fabric. (I'm sure someone will chime in if there is another!) They don't have an online shop, but you can contact them to request a price sheet and then place an order directly. Overseas shipping is pretty expensive, but even factoring in that cost the price per yard works out to less than any domestic merchant I've come across. They also have poly viscose fabric.
From other threads I've read here, people occasionally find inexpensive poly viscose in common tartans like Black Watch or Red Stewart in local fabric stores, but it's hit or miss.

Good luck making a decision on which of the dozens of Macdonald tartans to pick....at least you're likely to find one you like.

And also keep in mind that you may have a sentimental attraction to tartans that "belong" to a specific clan or family, but choose any tartan (ANY) that you think looks great and go with that. Don't feel chained down because of "official" tartans.

I plan on getting some of my official tartans but I am attracted to tartan in any color especially ones that are bright!

You might try these folks http://www.dcdalgliesh.co.uk/ , D.C. Dalgliesh is home based out of Scotland but they also have a mill in North America which might be beneficial to you on the cost factor . They have been around for a long time and are one of the few mills that can still do a custom weave tartan if needed .
I understand from your posts that you are not necessarily looking for a custom tartan , just thought I would mention it as they are one of the few that can still do it the old fashion way if needed . From my understanding they are also reasonable on pricing .

D.C.Dalgleish are a great mill, but they don't have another mill in the States, I'm not sure who you might be confusing them with, but there is only one mill. They concentrate on dancers tartans and mid weight tartans , but also do heavyweight and offer a custom weaving service, They are not cheap but the cloth is beautiful and worth the extra money. They do carry some stock , but it's not extensive. If you order from them be advised that it can take a long time, my current order with them is due in a bout 12 -14 weeks!

You are absolutely correct , they don't have a mill in the US , my mistake , I was confusing them with Locharron . Thanks for correcting that , otherwise someone may try searching for something that doesn't exist .
Best regards , Mike
