    Questions from a newbie.

Allow me to preface this post by saying that I'm not entirely sure where to post this, so please forgive my ignorance if I've run afoul of any forum rules. With that said I'm fairly new to Kilting and the limited time I've been able to go out has been quite liberating and I always seem to receive notice and never fewer than one stranger will approach me to compliment my newfound dressing choice. However I've hit a bit of a snag. The sporran I currently have is a simple black leather with some celtic weave embossed on the flap the problem is it's too small. What with my cellphone, wallet and car keys I have to wedge things in a certain way or nothing fits and God forbid I need to take anything out. So I guess my 1st question to you is this: Where can I find a bigger sporran with ample room that looks great but doesn't break the bank? Also as a follow-up; since I'm new to all this what is a good range to spend on such a thing? Thanks for your patience and input.

Take a look at "Carry-All" Sporran from Freedom Kilts. That one holds a lot.

At one time Stillwater kilts had one they called the Night Stalker. It came in nylon and leather. I have one of both types. It holds my big Samsung Note 4 and the work iPhone. Unfortunately I don't think the Stillwater Night Stalker is available anymore. I don't see it on their web site.

A bigger sporran can help, but it creates other problems by adding a lot of weight and bulk. Having a huge, heavy sporran flopping in front of you when you walk is kind of annoying. To be quite honest, a sporran isn't exactly an ideal way to carry anything but the smallest of basics. It's not meant to be a carry-all or a random junk bag like women tend to do with their purses.

So before you go upgrading to a larger sporran, rethink what you really need. Do you need the entire wallet that you usually carry in your trouser pocket, or can you pare it down to your license, a credit card, and a little cash? Do you need ALL the keys on your keyring? You'd be surprised how much space and weight you can save by limiting it to only what you need for where you're going.

But assuming you really do need or want a larger sporran, there are lots of choices out there in size, shape, style, and price. Too many to mention, without some direction on what you're looking for. Can you tell us what style you're after, or a budget amount?

Both the Stillwater black nylon sporran and the Carry All from Freedom Kilts are excellent for toting a load. I have and use both. However, as advised, beware of too heavy a sporran, else things get kinky.

The Woman gave me a front pocket wallet for Christmas. Now I'm using it all the time, it's so much more convenient than a bulky billfold for a back pocket. I don't carry more than three keys at a time. My cell phone is medium sized. All I really need to add for sporran management is a coin purse of some sort, nothing big or heavy. With that as a basic load, a small sporran will do. The first mentioned sporrans would allow you to carry in addition things like business cards, thumb drives, pipe an tobacco and such, but if you can do with out them, do.

I checked the Carry-All out, and I must say I like the look of it and from the picture it would seem to be large enough for all my things. Any idea what its dimensions are?

Maybe not totally "proper", but I have a belt "pouch" which will accommodate a cell phone and keys. I do not need it often, but it is convenient. It is pretty much out of sight when worn toward the rear on the side. The one I have is nice quality in a celtic design. I have seen them on E-Bay, for not too much. Just a thought. One of my day sporrans is "vintage" and very very small. It can only hold a small wallet.

Excellent advice. A couple years ago I bought a slim leather case for my iPhone that also holds my license, a credit card, folding money and a couple of my business cars. I also now have two sets of keys - one for each car (that also has a key for each of our two houses). Minimalist and convenient and makes sense for me. I find I can even do without a sporran on those "very casual" days. YMMV.

Ok, so I have some good options towards finding a better sporran. Thanks ever so much for the input. Now if I might be so bold I have 2 more questions to ask of you. First: What are your opinions on the "Great Kilt" as it is known, and Second: Is this the appropriate place to ask for advice such as I have?

    Hello Big McDaniel,

I actually seldom put much in my sporran. I have two kilts from Freedom Kilts that have trouser-esque pockets that hold all my stuff. Also, when kilted I am often wearing a kilt jacket. I tend to carry stuff in my jacket pockets more than my sporran.
