    Sporran alternative

Forgive me if this is a naive question, but are there any alternatives to the sporran? I love kilts, but am not a fan of the sporran. I would rather not have a bag banging about in the front of my kilt.

The Sporran is the traditional accompaniament to the kilt, If you wish to wear the kilt in it's traditional form thats it.

However, the Sporran is a the Scottish Developement of the scrip,

    http://sandradodd.com/duckford/bag
The ones shown are actually quite complicated, many were just a single piece of leather or cloth with a leather lace running though it's edge pulled tight to form a bag and then hung from the belt.

The predecessors to Pickpockets were "Cutpurses" a quick slice through the lace on your hip whether wearing Kilt or Trousers and away they went with your money. Move it to the middle at the front and it's a lot less likely..

What anyone wears is their choice, but to me and many others the sporran is the way to go.
To me a kilt without a sporran is a skirt ( yes there are short times when you might wish to remove it but not normally).

You could go for a belt pouch or two, such as those offered by USA Kilts: https://www.usakilts.com/accessories...t-pouches.html and Celtic Croft: http://www.kilts-n-stuff.com/kilts-a.../belt-pouches/

Or you could simply get a kilt with pockets...and if huge cargo pockets aren't your thing, Freedom Kilts offers plenty of alternatives.

You may also wish to consider a Rob Roy style sporran, many of which are designed so they can be worn on a kilt belt as well as a separate sporran belt. This allows them to be worn higher and they can be moved to the side if you wish.

I have seen many Highland dancers and drummers wear a sporran on the side and not in the front. A discussion on this can be found at http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...an-side-10657/

There are also modern kilts that have pockets built in if you do not want a belt pouch or sporran. Some of these now come in a variety of tartans in addition to the solid color utility style kilts. I know Freedom Kilts is one place that has a traditional looking kilts with pockets and I have seen a few others.

Why not have a kilt with pockets?

    Side slash pockets.

Hidden under-apron pockets for your cash and passport when you travel.

All sorts of pockets are possible. Limited only by your imagination.

And yes, pockets can still look traditional and dressy.

I feel the same way.I have found a guy in Canada. Greenman leather.. He is capable of making near anything, including side or hip pouch in different sizes. I'm not opposed to the sporran if needed to give it "the look" but I'm more comfortable with the idea of one of these.

You can google him. Heck of a nice guy too.

    Thanks for reading.
