Sporran alternative
Forgive me if this is a naive question, but are there any alternatives to the sporran? I love kilts, but am not a fan of the sporran. I would rather not have a bag banging about in the front of my kilt.

The Sporran is the traditional accompaniament to the kilt, If you wish to wear the kilt in it's traditional form thats it.
However, the Sporran is a the Scottish Developement of the scrip,

The ones shown are actually quite complicated, many were just a single piece of leather or cloth with a leather lace running though it's edge pulled tight to form a bag and then hung from the belt.
The predecessors to Pickpockets were "Cutpurses" a quick slice through the lace on your hip whether wearing Kilt or Trousers and away they went with your money. Move it to the middle at the front and it's a lot less likely..
What anyone wears is their choice, but to me and many others the sporran is the way to go.
To me a kilt without a sporran is a skirt ( yes there are short times when you might wish to remove it but not normally).

You could go for a belt pouch or two, such as those offered by USA Kilts: https://www.usakilts.com/accessories...t-pouches.html and Celtic Croft: http://www.kilts-n-stuff.com/kilts-a.../belt-pouches/
Or you could simply get a kilt with pockets...and if huge cargo pockets aren't your thing, Freedom Kilts offers plenty of alternatives.

You may also wish to consider a Rob Roy style sporran, many of which are designed so they can be worn on a kilt belt as well as a separate sporran belt. This allows them to be worn higher and they can be moved to the side if you wish.

I have seen many Highland dancers and drummers wear a sporran on the side and not in the front. A discussion on this can be found at http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...an-side-10657/
There are also modern kilts that have pockets built in if you do not want a belt pouch or sporran. Some of these now come in a variety of tartans in addition to the solid color utility style kilts. I know Freedom Kilts is one place that has a traditional looking kilts with pockets and I have seen a few others.

These solutions all look and sound great. I know the sporran is traditional--but the big furry pouch banging around in front is not really my style--at least, I don't think it is. Maybe when I actually get a kilt I will change my mind.
Thanks for all of the suggestions and not laughing me out of the the forum.

For sure there are some hairy beasties out there, but it need not be a big furry pouch. But you do need somewhere to put your "stuff" if you don't have pockets. There are many styles and offerings in plain leather and even cloth - and some of us make our own. I'm sure you've done a Google image search - the possibilities are innumerable, with some unique ideas and solutions for versatility. Also, because it doesn't hang so low as to be a junk protector, a sporran properly placed does not bang around but instead just sits there. Well, maybe if you started running it would, but not just walking around.

My daily wear sporran is a plain leather one worn on a belt. That way it is easier to slide it to one side if need be, which is quite often, especially when walking uphill when wearing it to one side makes it much more comfortable particularily with my lighter weight kilts. My wife prefers the furry ones, so you may have to have a discussion regarding your sporran.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

The plain one on a belt looks much more doable.
