newbie question
i will try and keep it short. i have my brothers wedding in september and i was planning on wearing a kilt. i was originally going to borrow a friends kilt but that was before i had a understanding of the whole clan tartan system. now i would really like to wear my family tartan. my grandfather was a Sutherland born in Scotland and the first of his family to move to canada he was also a sergeant in the gordan hylanders . i dont have the budget for a 300 to 500$ kilt so i have been looking for a pv in the sutherland tartan with no luck. all i can find is the Sutherland tartan in acrylic at highland kilts. i did contact usa kilts and they said the sutherland tartan is not available in pv. after reading tons of post here i dont want acrylic. does anyone know of a place that has what i am looking for?

When you were in touch with USA Kilts, did you get a price on their “semi-formal” kilts? They have several levels of formality with varying prices.

I believe you're thinking of the "semi-traditional" kilts. They are PV, so if they can't get the tartan in PV, the semi-trad won't be any help. Alas the 5yarders are in the $300 range.
Depending on how budgety things are, you can order a 5yd kilt from USA Kilts and pay the first half when you order, and pay the rest when they finish making it. If you're close enough you can do like me, and make payments here or there and use it as an excuse to visit the shop. "Oh, hey honey, I bought another pair of hose while I was there..."

P/V stands for Polyester/Viscose. Viscose is the British term for Rayon. So P/V means a Polyester/Rayon blend fabric.
I am very sorry but the only kilt quality Poly/Rayon fabrics are woven by Marton Mills. Rocky and I have access to every Tartan available from Marton Mills and I'm sorry but Sutherland is not among the stock P/V fabrics.

Sutherland used to be available in PV, but it was discontinued. But seeing as the progenitors of Clans Sutherland and Murray were brothers, if you feel like you absolutely need a connection to your ancestry, have you considered the Murray of Atholl tartan? It's available in PV in both ancient and modern. And while USA Kilts only stocks the ancient, it can't hurt to ask if they can special-order the modern version for you if that's what you prefer.

Heck, if you are going to go to the expense of a custom run of fabric you may as well get Sutherland.
