Kilt in "War Horse"

Went to see the new movie 'War Horse' with my wife and daughter last night. The movie proved to be rather maudlin and melodramatic but the scenes done of WWI were actually pretty good. (My grandfather served in the war in Europe with the British Army so I had more than a passing interest in the uniforms, weapons etc.)

There was a brief scene with a piper as they "went over the top" but he was in khaki.

The only kilt I saw was in a scene toward the end just as the horse was led into an auction paddock after the armistice. It was fleeting but looked to be dark green/navy but I couldn't identify.

The khaki you saw was most likely a kilt apron. Examples can be found in this thread of my visit to the 48th Highlanders museum.

Sorry - should have been more specific. What I meant was that the piper was not kilted.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a kilt apron? I have heard it once or twice referred to here.

My favorite photos of WWI are those of the kilted "Ladies from Hell". What it must have been to go through all of that in a kilt! As bad as it was to have had to go "over the top", I would not have wanted to be any of the Germans on the other side seeing them charge!

The kilted regiments wore khaki skirts over their kilts to prevent water seepage and staining.

The term "Kilt Apron" can also mean the unpleated front of the kilt.

If you look at the link I posted above post 13 shows a kilt apron. Essentially it is a cover that goes over the kilt to protect it.

Thank you. that clears it up. I did know that the two unpleated parts at the front were called aprons but did not know the other meaning.

It was a khaki-colored canvas "overkilt" that was designed to protect the wool off the kilt during rough duty/field duty. In most pictures I've seen of them, there is a front pocket sown on the apron in the location where one would normally wear a sporran. I'm sure others will post a picture of what they look like...or you can just go to the vintage kilt photos thread and you'll see tons of them.

Thank you. I saw the picture and that piqued my curiosity as it looked rather interesting but the plaque did not explain what it was.

Now I know what it looks like it looks like a neat idea. does the cover go all the way around and if so, is it pleated or something of that sort for movement?
