Hello folks, I think I found a good candidate for a conversion to a kilt jacket. it is 50 % wool & 50 % lambs wool made by Stafford for $7.00 at a thrift store. I pined it up hoping to see how it would look about 5 inches shorter. I did see that Kinloch Anderson has kilt jackets that would turn out very similar to this one if I just rounded the front shortened it a few inches.

I am trying to decide what would look better or if it is a good idea at all.

    What do you guys think?

Does it have a single or a double vent?

I have done three jacket conversions from thrift store jackets and I have never been sorry. Your jacket looks like an excellent candidate.

Looks like a nice jacket. I've done several conversions, and if I can do them, anybody can, because I'm kind of a moron. Give it a go

Pockets look back far enough to be usable and the buttons high enough. Im using a similar houndstooth tweed to make my dad a vest. Hope it works out well.

I say give'r. The jacket has a great pattern and for $7, you've got (almost) nothing to lose. If you somehow really mess it up, you can use that experience on your next one.

I have never done a conversion so I may be off the mark here but I understood the ideal jacket for conversion was a double vent. I have two converted jackets that I purchased second hand that have single vents and while they are acceptable to me for my current use the single vents clearly mark them as conversions. I would not personally put hours and hours of my own time into converting a single vent.

Again, I am perfectly willing to be corrected on this point.

Go for it. I think that's a great jacket to convert.
I still rely on these two old threads for help. The method takes a bit more time (using a bias strip) but the results are well worth it.

Thanks guys. I think I will go ahead with it. It fits perfect so I am looking forward to my first tweed jacket. The single vent should be easy to close and look normal because it is part of the center seam down the whole back. I will open it along the two side seams on the back for a double vent. I will post it when it is completed but I must wait until the wifey is finished making a bustle dress to get permission to use the machine.
