Kyle and Wil: While the technique Matt illustrates works well with "long-enough" garters (like those sold through the Scottish Tartans Museum and Comfy Kilt Hose!), it doesn't always with shorter garters (like those that often come in combination with House of Cheviot's hose). Of course, all that depends a lot on your calf diameter. For "shorter" garters I have successfully employed a simpler technique similar, but not identical, to that described by Chas.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Similar to Chas, I've found a knot isn't necessary. I just go over once and then tuck both ends under again so they lie flat. It really depends on the quality of the hose. I get a big bump under my cheap band hose, but the better quality House of Cheviot hose I've picked for myself have a much thicker turndown that will cover anything.

Hey...I'm having an awesome day. My Ancient MacFarlane box pleat from Matt Newsome just arrived this afternoon.

This is pretty much the method I use, the only difference being the very last step: Instead of looping the ends over the top and down behind, I tuck them from beneath up under the portion that's tied around the leg to adjust them to the length at which I want them to hang. I have a couple pair of garters that are inches shorter than the rest, and with those there's no need to tuck them up at all.

With the regular-length ones tucked up, of course there is a slight swelling, but it's really not something that "stands out" unaesthetically, as you can see here:

"It's all the same to me, war or peace,
I'm killed in the war or hung during peace."
