Similar to Chas, I've found a knot isn't necessary. I just go over once and then tuck both ends under again so they lie flat. It really depends on the quality of the hose. I get a big bump under my cheap band hose, but the better quality House of Cheviot hose I've picked for myself have a much thicker turndown that will cover anything.
