Debating right now on going completely kilted. If I do I have to do a 5K in my boots on Castaway Cay. As I would wear my Navy camo I guess it would be a boots and U run

Congrats on the weight loss. I was in the same boat. I lost over 30 lbs in a year and I had to alter a few of mine. Follow Barb's directions. You'll do fine.

This seems the closest thread to my question. Hope you don't mind my jumping in (a little late too). I want to invest in and purchase my first custom kilt/Prince Charlie. I have rented the Prince Charlie twice for weddings. I am satisfied that I will wear them for all social events from this point on.
Here comes the tricky part. Since retiring, I have gone from 218 to 271. I am on the way down now. I want to wear the kilt in the Memorial Day parade for 2014. (Learning the pipes too)
When should I order these items? I'd appreciate any advise that you all would give.
Warmest Regards, Dave

Hi SFCLangley, welcome to the board. Just a heads up for you, a Prince Charlie(PC) jacket is not an all purpose jacket. It is the equivalent of a tuxedo and most usually worn at black tie events. I would suggest that a Argyll jacket, in a tweed, would be more suitable for a memorial day parade. Cheers
Shoot straight you bastards. Don't make a mess of it. Harry (Breaker) Harbord Morant - Bushveldt Carbineers

Good morning and thanks. Yes, I should have been more clear. I plan to wear the PC for the formal events. Army Ball, Etc. Been looking at Argyll selections on many sites too. There are so many options out there. I like this forum. I look forward to the advise as I grow my wardrobe. Warmest, Dave

Hello Dave
It might be safest to continue to hire your kilt attire for a while, just keep cutting the carbs and see what happens to your waistline.
I know that kilt acquisition syndrome is a difficult thing to resist, but purchasing quality garments can be costly and you really want to reach a stable weight before pushing the boat out.
Unless you have money to spare of course....
Another factor I discovered - even though I make my own kilts - is that when a kilt is fitting well it seems such a shame to start to take a bit more exercise and cut down a bit more and to shrink out of it.
Far better to purchase a kilt which will encourage you to maintain at a desirable weight.

Exactly. Unlike Barb, I'm not adept at making garments, but I did this to a kilt that was too big, and it was easy. It does leave the third strap and buckle in the wrong place, but I just removed them instead of relocating them. Unless you are a highland dancer you don't really need them anyway. It also leaves the belt loops off centre, but I'm not that fussy that I feel I need to move them.
The vendor had sent the wrong size, read my adverse comments online [ETA: about needing a belt to hold it up] and sent me another one in the right size in a tartan I hadn't ordered. After adjusting the size of the first one I ended up with two kilts for the price of one. I understand they are no longer in business.
