I would think that having the apron of a kilt facing the business side of a forge (maybe spitting embers) would be preferable to the many folds of pleats that could catch several "sparklers" at a given moment.

Forged In Fire
I saw this episode and the part 1 as well. The kilt is worn in both, and is clearly on backwards. It is possible that he turned it that way to prevent unpleasantly hot rivets. I seem to recall reading that there was a brass rivet in the original Levi's holding the two legs together at the crotch. This rivet was later removed due to complaints that it would get too hot if sitting next to a campfire. Since he is also wearing a sporran with swinging tassels I suspect the reason is simply user error, lots of stress being on TV!

I watch the show a lot, but missed this episode. I'll have to catch it on demand. They have one of the judges who frequently appears kilted. He prefers waistcoats as well--usually put together pretty sharply.
The wrongways utilikilt reminds me of a story of why I am proud of my son. He went to his senior prom kilted and noticed as he walked in another boy who (obviously a first-timer) had his kilt on pleats forward. My son walked up to the other kid, shook his hand, leaned in and quietly told the other kid his mistake and maybe he should take a quick trip to the men's room. He did, problem solved and no-one had to be embarrassed. Like I said, proud of him.

I remember going to the PA Ren Faire (kilted) where I saw one fellow with his kilt on backwards. Not as bad, though, as the guy wearing the "Real Men Wear Kilts" t-shirt while wearing pants.

I can say from eperience that kilt snaps don't get THAT hot near a forge. Pretty much everything can get quite toasty, however!
