Mixed emotions indeed, the unknown is always strange. Yet somehow I have a feeling things will work out.

I do work on the border of the Navajo Nation and many clients are Navajo. Navajo warriors used to wear deerskin skirts.
Navajos have a clan system, Scots have a clan system
Navajos raise sheep and spin wool. Scots raise sheep and spin wool.
Navajos were invaded and conquered, Scots were invaded and conquered.
Navajos were told not to wear their traditional garments or speak their native language. Scots were told not to wear their traditional garments and told not to speak their native language.
Navajos were rounded up and sent on the long walk. Scots were rounded up and shipped overseas.
A lot in common. When Navajo clients ask about the kilt they are seriously seeking to learn more about it.

Hey Ron, has it crossed your mind to end run the dress code problem and get a raise in the bargain? Why not fill out that application for the vacant position of clinical supervisor? The CEO obviously thinks pretty highly of you. Why not?
Just a thought.

Ya know, that makes sense, unless you're happier in the trenches, like I am. I figger if I can sit cross-legged on the floor I'm still able to work with kids ( and as I get older, I'll just work with younger ones - it's not like I'll run out of families needing my expertise).

Ironically Scott, I did put in for the position when this lady was hired. When she interviewed she wowed management so much they immediately hired her and ended the interview process. I never had the chance to interview for the position.
I've come to believe that "rejection is God's protection" and trusted that.
Like Frog, the more I've learned about what the position entails, the less interested in it I am. In fact, my primary motivation for applying back then was to offer management someone who at least knew the agency culture and people already.
I'm a firm believer in the Peter Principle, that we rise to our level of incompetence. I'm extensively educated, trained, experienced and credentialed in the work I do - and I'm good at it and I enjoy it. Why would I want to give that up to do something I'm not good at - budgets and forms and harrump harrump meetings just for a few thousand more dollars a year to buy kilts with....hmmmmmm....more kilt money.....hmmmm...what do I gotta do???

First, I'm really glad you've got a respite. You do a wonderful job that few people would be willing to do and you deserve that extra boost to your days.
Second, I agree with your comment about more kilt money. That must definately keep your mind on the right track.
Third, I've only ever met two Navajo folk, but they were both wonderful people with a deep sense of their past and they were wonderfully respectuful of and interested in my choice to wear a kilt, so Kudos on your accurate comparisons.

This is what would worry me the most. Barring some unusual and extraordinary security risk which would usually require law enforcement to attend, it does not speak well of your employer. If they treated her that way, they'd probably have no problem treating you that way too.
I'm not criticizing you or your choices, just sympathizing. I too work for an employer inclined to the behavior quoted above.

Aye Abax,
In six years with the agency I've seen a lot of people come and go. It is a good thing that when people don't fit management doesn't prolong the agony, fires the person, and tries again. Those that succeed are promoted and given new challenges.
This is the first time in six years I've seen such security. From talking with the CEO after and reading between the lines, I'm guessing such action was necessary for some reason I don't need to know.
The hope for the dress code is that the CEO has teased me early on about kilts, much as a coworker would, but he never suggested that they were unprofessional or said don't wear them.
Now that she is gone I'm hopeful its a dead issue. The true cause of the dress code talk in management was the sweatsuit/tracksuit, just out of the desert in jeans look employees. Just the talk of a dress code seems to have helped them spiff up a bit.
I've taken extra care too, to look dressy in my kilts and not get too casual or out on the edge with them.

Ron you sound depressed about losing your co-worker in such a manner. May I suggest that the purchase of #57 (58?) might get you out of the doldrums.
