I received a response this morning. As I expected I was denied.

Not to seem insensitive, but you might sue the pants off of them.

Did they by chance give you any explanation to help understand their reasoning?

Thanks for this comment... I haven't laughed like that here at work for quite some time.
Sorry to hear about the denial. Hopefully there is a loophole somewhere in there.

Here is the response I received. Not wanting to publicize where I work I have the name and replaced with (the company).
"I have reviewed your request with corporate. Whereas the Company understands your preference based on your linage and your desire to exhibit so, (the company) has denied such request. Because you have so much interaction with customers/visitors, (the company) feels that this could make them feel uncomfortable, damaging (its) relationship with them. In an effort to continue with the great job that you have already been doing with (the company), we really feel at this time that we would like to continue with the current dress code at (the company). However, if you would like to wear a kilt to Company functions, such as picnics, Christmas parties, etc…we welcome you to do so. Feel free to stop up if you have any further questions regarding this issue."

I'm sorry you were turned down but I can understand their position. We may not like it but, people can be so sensitive. I can just imagine a customer getting weirded out by a kilt and then having issues with the company.

They're not against you wearing it to functions, so the door is still open. Perhaps if they see positive responses at functions they may change their position.
That said, I can understand their position and they were at least respectful in their response.

I understand their position. But, them telling you that you can wear it to functions is almost insulting. Of course you can! That's your time... you're not at a function in any official capacity... ie. drawing a check (even if you're salary, it's not like this is included when figuring your salary.) I can't wear one to work, for safety reasons (I work in a laboratory.) However, being a "labbie" I occasionally have to give presentations over projects. I've entertained the thought of wearing a kilt and argyll for such. I would indeed make sure that would be acceptable. I doubt there would be any problems. I won't say the name of my company, but I will say it is HUGE and prides itself on the diversity of people working for it. But, I never even asked if it was allowed for functions. I just showed up dressed well and actually never even thought twice about it.

I wish I had the option of what to wear.. although shorts and a t-shirt everyday isn't bad.
