Maybe next year.

I won't be wearing a kilt to christmas this year (though I'm 99% certain I'll be getting one) as my mom asked me not to.

You see, I wore my black watch thrifty to a late thanksgiving at my grandparent's house. They had never seen me in a kilt before, but they knew damn well that I liked them and was planning to go kilted. My grandpa wouldn't let it go. He wanted to know where I was wearing it and if I was wearing out in public and if I wore them to class. Apparently teachers are going to give me bad grades if I wear a kilt to class. Or so he tells me. And he had to ask repeatedly if I was going to wear it to a job interview, to which I replied "It depends on the job."

And my grandma, she didn't say a word about it, which from her is a very bad sign.

Of course my brother and his girlfriend were there too. They had seen my in a kilt before, and she loves it and is getting me one for christmas. My brother however has a bit of a complex due to the fact that his younger brother is better than him in every way, and therefore even though he actually likes kilts and wore one several times as a kid, he had to call it a skirt and make the jokes too.

Normally I wouldn't let that stop me, and if anything it makes me want to do it even more. However, when I talked to my mom I found out that my grandparents had called her and wouldn't shut up about the kilt. They told her that someone needs to sit me down and explain that I am ruining my life. A little bit of an exaggeration don't you think?

So, in order to spare my mom (who fully supports my kilt habit, and who may very well be taking me to mecca [aka the utilikilt store] if my plan to visit her next summer works out) from the hell of getting cornered by one of our crazier relatives (several of whom feel the need to throw a fit every Christmas) and being forced to deal some idiotic rant about my little piece of acrylic being responsible for the downfall of western civilization, I will reluctantly be wearing the old denim shackles this year.

I just realized that I will be kilted at the Christmas party over at work. That will probably be the big Christmas thing for me. It's Kiltmas.

Looking forward to my first one, I plan on wearing it to the christmas party at work if itcomes in time, and depending on how I like the wind on my knees, I'll wear it the rest of this winter.

The only place I'll probably go back to jeans for is when I have to work on the construction site.

This is my first Christmas kilted. I wore my SWK heavyweight Black Watch to the office Christmas party a couple of weeks ago, and I'm taking it with me to my non-kilted brother's house for Christmas (I hope my ebay Argyle arrives in time).

Maybe next year I'll visit my kilted brother (see Turpin's entry above) if they are in Atlanta for Christmas and we can present a united front.

Last year was my first, had just gotten my 9 yd MacLaren for my birthday a couple of months earlier. We had a couple of friends over for Christmas dinner.....a few jokes but not bad. I was/ am so proud of it that I don't care about the jokes. This year I wore it at our Christmas party in our home...had to, it was the same group of friends who pitched in to buy it for me last year. All good comments and lots of fun.....and lots of Chivas.

The first time I can remember was 1975. I was 20 and wore the first kilt I had bought myself to my employer's Christmas dinner/dance. The lady sitting next to me was a manager's wife, probably more than twice my age, and kept insisting that my Clan Mackintosh kilt was a MacDonald. I distinctly remember her hand going up the outside of my right thigh (inside the kilt) after dinner.
