Sorry, I also don't understand. A kilt needs a sporran. There are many ugly and great looking sporrans out there. I don't care for many of the day styles, but did find "hunting type" one that I like quite well. I also have a full mask badger that does me for both day and evening, and is a nice change. I plan to get another soon, but I well have to wait. I would check out the L&M Highlander site. They don't do retail, but are well known around the world. If you find one you like, email them and they can put you in touch with the local business that carries them... and they have been known to sell directly on occasion. I hope this helps.

Maybe your subconscious equates the sporran with a purse. But hey, after all, sporran is just gaelic for purse or pouch.

But I say, if you're man enough to wear a kilt, you're man enough for a sporran.

Chase, I often feel the same way as you do. I tend to buy sporrans that are really subtle and simple for this reason. When I first started wearing a kilt, I didn't wear a sporran at all. These days I prefer to have one for the convenience of its functions, but I'm certain that anyone who looks at my outfit in this small town won't understand what it is. I apply velcro to the backs of the three tassells so that they don't make any noise bouncing around when I walk. I really don't want that thing drawing anymore attention.

Also, for whatever reason, my sporrans are the first things to fall apart. I've had two of them break in various ways. I'm pretty tired of that. I shouldn't shop on ebay for sporrans ...

There are several kiltmakers who will put pockets in your kilt if you ask them. I know that sport kilts and freedom kilts do this. Also, it can't be too terribly hard to make them yourself.

As I believe has been noted earlier, perhaps it is simply the location the sporran is worn? It could seem like one is trying to call attention to one's crotch. I suspect that the simpler styles of sporrans would be more appealing to you or wearing them on the side (very, very traditional by the by). I met Iolaus at a Highland Games a couple of years ago and he wore his black Freelander on his hip and it really worked. I don't think a fancier style would do as well to be worn in this fashion, but the "Rob Roy" or bag style sporrans do.


By the by, northernsky, it takes a certain je nais quoi to pull off a full mask sporran in my opinion. It is very easy to get self concious and have it wear you.

That's what I'm trying to figure out... if it's the sporran as a whole, or just that there are certain details and aspects that bother you. Maybe it's even just getting past the concept and getting used to it. I'm not sure.

So, modern... smallish... nothing that stands-out too much. I've seen some really smart, but simple day/casual sporrans that could fit that description, still (I can't remember where I've seen them... online, but I haven't seen tons in person).

Does wearing it feel strange to you or get in the way? I'm not sure what to say about that except to just try to get used to it and make use of it (especially cool about something like the Nightstalker, I'd love to get one for my husband). If it's really important to you to wear one, that is. If you're happy with the Nightstalker, perhaps try to wear that and save the dressier or more formal occasions for the sporrans that are a little less to your liking? I understand it can be a pain to spend the money on something you don't wear very often, but that's probably true for most people. It's just in your case, you're not a big fan of sporrans, and I do understand that.
