What I can tell you is that they are a bloody nuisance to wear! I'm a bit over six foot tall, and the feathers add almost a foot-- I am constantly bowing and dipping to keep the feathers from hitting things. I normally wear either a simple clansman's cap badge or my own badge with two silver feathers behind it. Not as dramatic, but infinitely more practical.
Be that as it may, Scott, they certainly do look grand! My 21 yr old niece recently took up turkey hunting because her boyfriend is a hunter and she got herself a bird a month or so ago. If there are suitable feathers left after the proper trophies have been made she has promised me some. An obviously non-eagle feather or two in my bonnet on a special occasion might be nice. I don't expect to look as splendid as you, but it might just work.

    Regards,

    Brian

On occasion I have worn a few small cock hackles in my bonnet, but I personally steer clear of wearing any large raptor (or turkey) feathers in my bonnet, as I don't want to give the wrong impression of my status & cause myself embarrassment.

    Just a thought.

Just as an aside, when I am not wearing "Big Feathers" I tuck a sprig of holly behind my cap badge. That's because, at the end of the day, despite whatever other status I may have, I am first and foremost a clansman.

I certainly understand the concern, Terry, and I would never want to represent myself as something I'm not. It is unlikely, however, that I will have many (if any) opportunities to wear feathers where anyone would actually understand the significance of eagle's feathers.

If I were to attend the nearest highland games and it was cool enough to wear something as substantial as my Mackie bonnet I'd probably wear my X Marks cap badge with a dandelion plant badge. I am quite pleased with my new "clan" and would want to advertise the fact. As those games are (I think) usually in July, I'd probably just wear my Panama hat to survive the sun and the heat.

    Regards,

    Brian

You look absolutely wonderful Scott! I love your feathers and am proud to see another Scottish Armiger wearing his rank appropriately and with such class, reverence, and pride.

    Yours aye,

I have a heraldically ignorant, botanical question.

Does that include Yaupon Holly, and other Ilex plants, or does it have to be European Holly (Ilex aquifolium)?
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Oh Dear......I really don't know. It's the green prickly kind, if that helps...
