Looking for a little "peer review" - kilt history
Hello to all,
I've been wearing a kilt to SCA events for about 2 years (since I started) and have gotten to the point that newcomers are asking me about my kit, specifically my kilt (it's a light-weight great-kilt from Celtic Croft, btw) and I put together an email for one newcomer who seemed particularly interested. Now friends are telling me that I should publish this as an article in our local newsletters and I was looking for some review/corrections of the article (some of the stuff in there I've gotten third/fourth-hand and word-of-mouth).
Well, I posted it to the SCA livejournal community and one of the posters there suggested albanach.org which led me here.
This seems like a much better place to ask the favor of some review, so if anyone has the time I would very much appreciate a comment either here or on the Livejournal where I've posted it, http://oscagne.livejournal.com/113111.html.
Thanks in advance, and I'll be hanging around this forum because I love the chance to wear my kilts and am looking for more opportunities to do so.

It looks pretty good to me. Matt's site will give you more information on the leine, as well as how that English industrialist didn't invent the feilidh-beag (the article "The Early History of the Kilt").
There have been at least a couple of threads on period leg wear (wrappings and footless socks) - I'ld list them, but my search fu isn't working too well this morning. I'm sure someone will point them out.
BTW - was Oscagne the smarter brother, or Itagne? And welcome to X Marks the Scot.

Your article looks very accurate to me, in fact it looks more accurate than some of the widely touted sources that people will probably direct you to.
Just one thing. What exactly is the SCA period? When does it start and finish? I would assume it corresponded to the Renaissance, but it is a long time since I sat in a history class.

It's a pretty good article, however, an Englishman did not reinvent the small kilt. There is historical data describing the kilt to be in two pieces that predates by some 50 years the story of the English foundry owner Rawlinson (I may be off on the spelling of his name.) M.A.C. Newsome is definitely a wellspring of information.
BTW, welcome to the forum.

SCA period is "pre-1600". The start date was never officially adopted, but unofficially it's 600AD. Some folks ignore that, though and go full Roman, but you don't see many Ancient Greeks, so functionally it's probably "the end of the Western Roman empire"-ish.

Okay, I think I've corrected the mistakes. I recognized Mr. Newsome's articles, but not his name. I'm getting the idea that he must be getting plagiarized fairly often, or maybe I just wasn't paying attention to the by-lines at scottishtartans.org.
I appreciate everyone's taking the time to comment for me.
Itagne was the smarter brother, but also the lazier and less successful one. Also the smartass. Hm... looks like I picked up the wrong nick all those years ago on alt.fan.eddings.

And remember, that the renaissance occurred at different times in different countries. Started, if I remember my history correctly in Italy then spread north.
