That repair is not only sensible, but a reversal to the original method to hold this sort of buckle. The wire thingy is circa 1950. I concur, file & emery paper over the cut edge of the pin, then add a 'small dab'' of super glue to hold it in place.
And,"give the man a boiled haggis' for his quick thinking, innovative approach, and easy method; a true follower of the old saw K.I.S.S.
