The skies above San Jose California were blue and clear this weekend. But there was something very different in the air. From my yard I looked up and saw a few World War II vintage bombers flying overhead at regular intervals. There were three in all. A B-24 Liberator, a B-25 Mitchell, and a B-17 Flying Fortress. The planes were visiting in nearby Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View, CA as a part of the Collins Foundation “Wings of Freedom tour”

I was lucky enough to be on their flight path so I heard their droning engines and saw the flash of the silver bodies often over the weekend (as I write this I can just hear just a little bit of one of those engines fading into the distance Northward.
It was an amazing feeling to see these old warriors airborne like they should be. I couldn’t help thinking how much Alex would have enjoyed seeing them in flight. I tried my best but I only managed one good picture. So here’s the B-17 as seen from my backyard.
So here’s to the legend of these mighty machines and the very brave men like Scot Gilmore’s Dad and the F-H.C.A.G.‘s Grandfather who flew them.
Cheers
Jamie
