Yes, magnets can cause damage to credit cards and hotel keys! But you really have to work at it. As to the possible damage to cell phones, I don't believe that one. If you opened up your phone and rubbed the magnet repeatedly around on the circut board, maybe.
As to where in the hard drive the magnet is, my advice is to take apart all that you can. Pry, twist, remove screws, etc, and then take a metal object and hold it close to the parts. Believe me, you'll find it.
