Heard a story awhile back of a guy getting a piece of lumber from an old growth tree from Belleau Wood (one there during the famous battle) and sending it to his son over in Iraq. The story said that it was a program the French do every year. They cut down ONE tree and plant a new one in it's place. The lumber is given to US Marines (and vets) as a thank you.
ANYBODY have ANY information on this? I've tried contacting several sources(USMC Public Affairs, French park services, etc) but have never gotten a reply.
I have several project's in mind if I can get a piece, no mater the size.
Large piece: a stand for my NCO sword
Medium piece: pistol grips for a M1911 and/or a M9
Small piece: a Sgian Dubh with NCO sword like etching. (to be worn with a "Leatherneck kilt")

Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated. This would be up there with getting sand from Iwo Jima (I still call it that)
