Ted. The Scots have never been afraid to adapt their head gear to match the climate, where ever they find themselves in the world. The topee( like Jamie's sun hat) is a prime example of the British army including Scots regiments to be able,on rare occasion, to adapt to conditions. A fur bonnet of some sort being worn in the freezing northern temperatures is just as sensible.

You know your climate far better than me, but I always thought that when I was in Western Australia a panama worked really well although a wider brim might have been better.

With the knowledge that we have these days of the dangers of skin cancer it would be plain stupid to put fashion before common sense.
