"Great Scot" Kilts
Has anybody ever ordered from these folks? Great Scot
I was thinking of getting a 13oz from them. They have a payment plan with no interest, making it really easy to get into a heavy hand-made kilt. However, I have no idea of their quality, or what material they actually use (maybe I'm just not seeing things I should be - I am pretty new to all this.)
They claim they are "Importers of the Finest Scottish Goods," and also that the prices include all duties and shipping from Scotland (making it seem as if they are hand-made in Scotland.)
The 13oz. they call a "Men's Braeriach Fabric" and somewhere else call it 13oz. twill. I want to make sure this is actually wool, and high quality stuff, like a the good "tanks" you guys mention all the time. ~525$
The 16oz. they call a "Men's Strome Fabric" which I've seen as being a high quality wool. ~575-625$ per their website.
Please help clear any of this up and tell me what you think of their work. The prices seem fairly reasonable if these are indeed Scottish made "Tanks" - as far as I can tell anyway (please let me know if I'm wrong..)
Thanks a lot!

I was under the impression that their kilts were made in the United States, but I could be wrong. "Braeriach" and "Strome" are trademarked names used by Lochcarron of Scotland for their 13oz. and 16oz. worsted wool fabric. Lochcarron is one of the better-known Scottish tartan weavers. I'm sure the kilts made by Great Scot will be of high-quality wool, at least. I haven't heard anything about their kilt-making skills, though.

Their e-mail I received this morning eluded to the same. I knew I had heard the terms before, I just wasn't 100% on the meaning.
Looking through their gallery, it appears they do fine work. If the gallery does show kilts made by them.

The payment plan they have sounds great.
Thanks for the tip.
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

Hmm.. I'm going to have to look into getting a kilt from them. Their payment plan is very similar to that of The Scotland Yard.

great scot shop
I have ordered a 16oz kilt from the great kilt shop in dress Thompson, my second kilt from them will be in this month, in McTavish modern. The quality is outstanding as far as I can tell from my limited experiance with buying kilts. The way the payment plan goes (which is what I used) is $75.00 down and then monthly payments of $60.00 until the balance is paid. As soon as they get the kilt in from Scotland, she ships it directly to you. You do not have to wait for it to be paid off. Usually it is about 6-8 weeks for the kilt to arrive in her store, and then just shipping time to your location. The wool is top notch from Locharren and excellent quality. I feel that you would not be disappointed with going this route. Just my 2 cents anyway.
BTW, I am at work now an do not have any pictures of me kilted, but will try to post some tonight or tommorrow morning for you.

So, they are indeed hand-sewn in Scotland?

I went to the site. There are a few things there that cause me to have reservations.
Of 11 oz. tartan they claim, "If you live in the warmer climates of the United States, this is the weight for you." I have worn 16 oz tartan in 90 degree weather with no discomfort. 11 oz/yard is really too light for a kilt.
They sell family coats or arms. "Completely Authentic and Accurate!
We have a collection of over 500,000 Coats of Arms associated with the most common surnames from many different nationalities, and we have access to resources that allow us to custom make Coats of Arms for just about any surname of European origin. These heraldically accurate Coats of Arms are presently available as full color 8 1/2 X 11 prints on white or parch-tone paper."
Of course, there are no such things. A coat of arms belongs to only one individual at a time, and a person can be crimally prosecuted in Scotland for displaying arms not his own. This sends off all sorts of red flags.
Finally, they advertise ladies' kilts. Perhaps it's a quibble, but ladies do not wear kilts. Men wear kilts. Ladies wear kilted skirts. Kilt merchants should know the difference.
Perhaps they retail good kilts. I don't know. But I would hesitate to rely on them for advice.

The Coat of Arms bothered me a lot too as that's something I've always held a lot of respect for.
I've been reading through their blog and it seems many customers are having issues with poor communication and slow shipment.
I believe I will be going through somebody I've actually heard of and seen work from.

I was looking at their website and I'm not too impressed either. It would be best to leave the company alone until more positive reviews come forth.
