28th Annual Braemar Summer School of Highland Dancing & Kilt Making
June 27–July 2, 2009
At Emma Willard School, 285 Pawling Avenue, Troy, New York 12180

Instructor: Judith Sullivan
Keene, New Hampshire
We welcome Ms. Sullivan back as our kilt-making instructor. Her interest in kilt-making began when her daughter started taking Highland dance lessons in 1996. She has been making kilts since 1997, when she fi rst attended the Braemar Summer School, under the direction of Elsie Stuehmeyer. She returned many times to learn everything Elsie could teach her about this artform. Judy makes kilts for customers across the U.S., and has dressed a number of champion dancers. She is currently working with an apprentice through a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. Judy has had a needle in her hand since she was seven years old, and never travels without her sewing box and work to do. When not making kilts, she keeps busy doing embroidery, needlepoint, lace-making, quilting, and knitting.

As mentioned above, Judy learned kilt-making from Elsie Stuehmeyer, co-arthur of
The Art of Kiltmaking. In fact, Judy and Barb were both Elsie's students in that first class, and Judy continued studying under Elsie in every class until Elsie's "retirement" in 2007. That year Elsie designated Judy as her replacement for her East Coast kilt camps.
