How low does the sporran hang?

The general rule I've heard is 4 fingers or a hand width below the belt, of course it can go slightly higher or lower depending on personal preference.

Good advice there, providing the kilt is made to traditional specifications. I am not being snooty here, but as the waistline of "modern" style kilts are lower, the above advice might not hold sway.
