The general rule I've heard is 4 fingers or a hand width below the belt, of course it can go slightly higher or lower depending on personal preference.

I tend to wear mine about two and a half to three fingers below the belt. I think it just looks and feels better with my body type. Experiment in front of the mirror with some different heights and see what looks and feels right to you. But like McMurdo said, four fingers is the general rule that I think a lot of us have read and heard, start there and adjust as you feel necessary. When I was a little bit thinner, I wore my sporran a little bit lower than I do now.

Good advice there, providing the kilt is made to traditional specifications. I am not being snooty here, but as the waistline of "modern" style kilts are lower, the above advice might not hold sway.

I like mine a wee bit higher, but I have short, stumpy arms. Higher means easier access.

My pipe band played in with another band at a recent area Highland games a few weeks ago. There was a gentleman of great substance (and height) playing with the other band, and for some reason, while still being looped through his belt loops, his sporran was clear down just above his knees. It was all I could do to keep from going over and adjusting his sporran chain. I don't care how big y'are -- that's just sloppy.

    Aye Jock
I assumed the original poster was meaning a sporran with a traditional kilt.

    I did.

Well, that's assuming my StillWater Heavyweight maintains it's stance as traditional... ... instead of insisting on sliding down somewhat over the hours...
