revisited, Onward to some good shoes
Some infernal tapeworm
gnaws this child of God.
I've been through three shearings
and I'm not yet shod.
I am not discouraged, though I am quite broke
Inconsistent si-izing makes me want to choke...
The Trickers' from Sierra Trading were UK sized and didn't fit, though they were as lovely as you'd ever hope to see. Return for refund (less shipping) was simple enough, but it didn't get me much closer to footwear Nirvana.
Allen Edmonds have very good quality, but I managed to get three pairs of the same shoes (San Marco) in three sizes (8,8.5,9) that all seem to fit me about the same. Either something was amiss in the size markings or I really need a pair of 8.375s. I found a couple of other pairs of AEs that were lovely, but either a different last or another size marking error caused me to give them away. My brother is grateful and beautifully shod these days.
The camel's nose having come into the tent, it was only a matter of time before I tried again with Tricker's. This week I bit the proverbial bullet on a pair sold through their RETRICKERS division on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/Trickers-Robert-...10985326711973
They refund VAT for appropriate customers and they will accept returns. But shipping is 25 GBP one way. I bought a plain pair of what they call Country Tramper shoes. The scar is healing nicely from where they took my kidney and the guy did pay me in cash.

two easier alternatives
I hear tell in the Amazon rainforest, you simply dip your feet in rubber sap for a custom fit.
Otherwise, I am thinking of having a guy nail a pair of steel-U shapes to the bottoms and getting it over with.

Yes, that's pretty much the only way you're getting custom shoes for less than the price stated in your OP

Just as the farrier raised his hammer...
The DHL truck pulled up and I have my gorgeous Trickers' shoes. They are lovely and they fit. The quality is superb and the price, well, it won't matter forever. I intend to keep the shoes at least that long, though.

With the VAT refund, they were not horrifically expensive.
And thus ends our tale.

shouldn't a country shoe have a treaded rubber sole?
Other than that, they are GORGEOUS, and I am green with envy.

Agreed, they are gorgeous! As for the sole... I mean there are "country shoes" and there are "COUNTRY shoes"
I'm assuming they're for traipsing through a country fair, or Highland games grounds... not through a marshland...
Then I would wear these:
in NZ it would be these:
and certainly no kilt to get ruined!
Cheers!
