Determining Waist Size of an Old Kilt
I'm sure this is quite easy to do--and I bet there is an old thread lurking somewhere-- but how does one determine the waist size of an old kilt? I know the overall length: how do I figure its size?
Thanks!

fasten at snuggest ,measure ,and double it. approximately 2/3 of overall length.

Sandy, I don't know how accurate this is, but I measure from the middle hole on the strap of the inside apron to the buckle on the R/H side of the kilt, double the measurement, and add 1-inch:
Hole-in-strap to buckle: 19 inches x 2 = 38 *** inch = 39 inch waist (more or less).

Yeah, it's fairly simple. Buckle it and measure the inside. Which is to say, measure from the inside face of the lining to the other inside face of the lining. If you have a cloth tape measure, it's a lot easier to do. If you're just using a ruler/yardstick or regular metal tape measure, you can measure inside-to-inside with it laid flat, and double it.
I would do it with the buckles at their tightest and loosest, and use the average for a general size. But I've actually found that when measured this way, it doesn't really accurately reflect the best fit on a real person. But it's "pretty close".

Gather as many people as you can and let them try it on!

It's not even as complicated as having to buckle it. Lay the kilt out, open, on your bed or some other handy flat surface, with the inside up. Measure from the first hole on the leather strap on the inside apron, straight across the waist line until you get to the "button hole" in the kilt. That's the waist size at the smallest setting.

Thank you! All so simple when it is written down in black and white. I feel like an idiot for not having figured that out for myself! Duh!
