Which Weaver? Which Maker?

I am sure this question has been asked before but if I want a kilt made in a particular tartan ( Taylor Ancient ) and in at least an 8 yard more like 9 yards in my measurements, Which weavers fabric would you use and who would you ask to make it and why?

Hi Simon,

I would go with either Lochcarron Strome, or Dalgliesh - both superior, heavyweight (15-16 ounce pure new wool) fabric, perfect for the traditional 8 yard kilt - and in your case, 9 yards. The reason being is these two particular mills provide excellent quality tartan that is ideal for kiltmaking. All of my kilts are made by Kinloch-Anderson out of Leith, Scotland, however, there are many other reputable kiltmakers out there to choose from - many of them current members of this forum! I am sure many other XMTS members, to include our resident kiltmakers, will provide additional details.

Well, if weight is important to you, I'd recommend 16 oz (heavy) weight. Currently there are two mills who stock Taylor ancient in heavy weight, Lochcarron and House of Edgar. Both produce excellent cloth.

I'd get swatches of both, and see if you have a color preference one over the other. Every mill has a slightly different color range so you may find you like one better.

If you are ok with either mill's colors, the House of Edgar cloth is woven with a traditional selvage, so that would be my preference.

He's not very far from where I live, he's made the other three kilts I own, and I like the way he makes his kilts.

I know that you yourself are an excellent and highly regarded kiltmaker. But who would you recommend this side of the pond.
I know that yourself, Barb T, Lady Chrystel and others on here are revered kiltmakers. However what about UK makers?

You might want to check out Paul Henry (a board member). He's on your side of the pond and does custom work.

I own one Paul Henry kilt and there is soon to be a second - he already has the fabric. He is also investigating a possible third (if he can get the fabric). He would be my recommendation.

A day trip to London, meet Paul, sort out measurements and a time-frame and then it is just down to the waiting. Which I am doing right now.
