How to break the news to my wife?

This all sounds so familiar . . . especially since my wife doesn’t know that I have registered a tartan (last year she told me it was much too expensive) and ordered a bonnet!
And John, whatever happened to Çağman’s Australia kilt? The Bruce kilt looks marvellous, by the way!

My wife and I make a game out of it. She was feeling guilty about having a piece of jewelry made. So, I ordered a Matt Newsome box pleated kilt, a Ferguson Britt sporran and a vintage Argyl jacket, which all together cost less than her jewelry, but I didn't want to push it. Last month she talked me into buying an arctic fox sporran, so I strongly encouraged her to order the new bodhran that she was considering; now she'll be jonesing for the next few months.

That's how my wife and I do it! Whenever one of us wants something a bit pricey and "unnecessary", we encourage the other to be a bit extravagant and get something. Then, everyone's happy

Sounds familiar to me.
I pulled up one day with a Harley on a trailer, not entirely unexpected. I had been talking about getting a bike for commuting (I was driving a diesel truck at the time), but she hardly ever pays attention to my musings...
I found an older Sportster for pretty cheap (paid cash for it) and loaded it up on my trailer.
I pulled up at the house and got out. I heard my daughter say through our front door, "Mom, Dad just pulled up with a motorcycle on a trailer" I heard the "WHAT????" shriek pretty easily... Yeah, as you can imagine it was kind of loud for a bit. She got over it somewhat. I still get harassed on occasion. I figured she would listen better the next time I talked about things. NOPE... I still surprise her with stuff from time to time. She just won't learn.

I learned a lesson years back from an old gun collector. Whatever you spend on yourself, if you give your wife half that much in cash you will be OK. Just don't tell here your giving her HALF what you spent...

Last night I walked by the room where my husband and daughter were relaxing. I heard the words, "Toy hauler" come from the iPad.
I immediately thought of this thread.

My mom did the same thing when I had "motorcycle" on the craigslist search engine. She freaked out.

Reminds me of a phrase I have often heard from some of the older gentleman in my family in regards to a similar situation; "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.:

I still remember the day I came home from work -- my wife was washing dishes, and without turning around, she said, "The Harley place called and said your motorcycle was in." This was our first discussion about me getting a bike. And our last. It's been more than a decade, but I'm sure she is going to forgive me any day now.

My wife was on an extended business trip in Dallas TX (we lived in Northern VA) and one Friday night I picked her up pretty late from the airport and as we pulled into our parking space in front of the townhouse she saw my brand new bike and her response was "you son of a b*tch, you got one before me!".

It's all good and while $500 is a good chunk to spend without discussion, it's not like you won't be buying groceries this week because of the purchase (hopefully).
